International Women in Engineering Day took place on 23rd June. The international awareness campaign aims to raise the profile of women in engineering and to show women and girls the diverse and exciting career opportunities available in this industry.
As the economy recovers from the COVID-19 pandemic, critical skills shortages will emerge in the engineering and technology sectors. There is a huge demand for engineers of all kinds, from civil to support the country’s critical infrastructure needs to mechanical, structural and electrical. There is also a need for a more diverse workforce and therefore has never been more important to inspire and encourage more people, especially women, to study engineering at third-level and to choose a career in engineering.
To celebrate International Women in Engineering Day the Irish Universities Association spoke to six women at varying stages of their career journey in engineering from current student to Executive Dean of Engineering, about why they chose engineering and their experience in the field.
