For the third consecutive year, the Construction Jobs Expo returns to Dublin and will host the country’s leading employers as they recruit for roles across the industry.

Are you currently working in the construction industry or thinking about moving into this sector? If so, the Construction Jobs Expo in Citywest Convention Centre, Dublin is the perfect place to explore your options on Saturday 23rd May. Drop by any time between 10am - 4pm.

Construction Jobs Expo Returns

Construction Jobs Expo is a free event where thousands of construction sector jobs will be on offer. Companies in attendance on the day will be seeking engineers, electricians, estimators, quantity surveyors, health, safety, environmental and quality professionals as well as instrument technicians and experts in heating and plumbing.

The first event of its kind, the popularity and growth of the Construction Jobs Expo since its launch in 2018 signals the high demand for skilled labour in Ireland. This event will feature the leading players in the construction sector at home and abroad. In addition to meeting employers, there will also be the opportunity to attend a range of innovative industry talks from career professionals who will cover advice on everything from upskilling and education courses, to bridging the gender gap in the sector.

Background

Construction Jobs Expo is organised by Careers Unlimited, an Irish company which specialises in education and career enhancement.

Kevin Branigan from Careers Unlimited says: “At present, the construction sector is one of the most exciting areas to work in. There are so many opportunities that it makes sense to have a forum where industry professionals can hear about the opportunities available and speak directly with potential employers. All of our exhibitors are leading players in the sector and this is the only industry  event of its kind that is free to enter. If you’re looking for a new role, Construction Jobs Expo is the place to be on May 23rd.”

Construction deaths have more than doubled in the last year, it has emerged, as the latest figures released by the Health and Safety Authority (HSA) show there were 46 fatalities in the workplace in 2019. Provisional data, released last week, shows an 18% rise from the previous year when 39 people died.

Chief Executive Officer of the HSA, Dr Sharon McGuinness, expressed concern that construction deaths had increased from five in 2018 to 12 in 2019, with 75% of all fatal injuries taking place in the last six months. With falls from heights the leading cause of all construction worker deaths last year, she highlighted the Authority’s concern that many of the fatalities involved small companies and self-employed tradespeople.

Construction Deaths: a Response

“The figures show that the number of construction deaths have increased to levels not seen since they last spiked in 2015, when falls from a height were also the biggest trigger in fatal injuries.

“This is a worrying trend and shows that without proper risk assessments and health and safety considerations, ultimately a worker may pay the price with their life,” Dr McGuinness warned. She said that the HSA’s provisional statistics show that the rate of construction fatalities has increased considerably in the last year from 3.5 per 100,000 people employed to approximately 8.2 per 100,000.

“Construction workers engage in many activities that may expose them to hazards, such as falling from a height, unguarded machinery or being struck by construction equipment. Our provisional data also shows that 940 non-fatal incidents and dangerous occurrences were reported to the HSA from the construction sector in 2019.

“While the message seems to have got through to big construction firms who have improved standards around worker safety, what we are seeing is self-employed and smaller building companies not realising their duty and responsibility to staff, and cutting corners when it comes to health and safety.

“We plan to target working at heights throughout our construction safety campaigns this year, and will also engage directly with the sector to increase knowledge and application of risk assessment tools to be used on all sites.”

A Dangerous Mindset

Predicting that incidents and deaths will continue to rise until there is a change of mindset, Dr McGuinness said: “Most deaths are preventable. Generally, incidents occur when safety shortcuts are taken. But the mentality of placing people's lives in peril in the race to finish a job - or save money - needs to stop. Lives depend on it.”

However, the annual data also found that farming was still the most dangerous sector, with 18 fatalities in 2019, followed by construction and transportation and storage, accounting for 12 and six deaths, respectively, last year.

The Construction Industry Federation is joining forces with Dublin Simon Community to support 50 individuals and families out of unstable emergency accommodation and into more permanent, safe homes. CIF Corporate Partners  Eaton has awarded Dublin Simon Community with a grant of €20,000.

CIF Corporate Partners Support Dublin Simon Initiative

The concept of the CIF/Dublin Simon Community collaboration is simple; CIF members will endeavour to raise funds, amounting to €20,000, throughout the next year. Each donation of €20,000 will be used by Dublin Simon Community as a deposit on a home for an individual or a family. The aim is to generate 50 x €20,000 deposits to support Dublin Simon Community in acquiring 50 homes for individuals and families experiencing homelessness.

Using a combination of donor funds, private finance and government grants, Dublin Simon Community will leverage financing in tandem with each donation of €20K (equal to approx. 10-15% of one unit’s total value) to sustainably acquire one unit of accommodation for an individual, couple or family.

Eaton is the first CIF member to do this, having already awarded Dublin Simon Community with a grant of €20,000, and the hope is that other members will follow suit throughout 2020.

Phil Kane, Country Manager, Eaton Corporation said:

“At Eaton, we’re proud to support Dublin Simon Community’s initiative and have a truly meaningful, long-term impact giving a home to people and families experiencing homelessness.”

Dublin Simon Community works to prevent and address homelessness in Dublin, Kildare, Wicklow, Meath, Louth, Cavan and Monaghan. Dublin Simon provides services at all stages of homelessness to over 7,600 people and families to enable them to move to a place they can call home.

Sam McGuinness, CEO of Dublin Simon Community said:

“Presently in Ireland, there are over 10,400 people (6,696 adults and 3,752 children) living without having access to the basic human need of a safe place to call home. Every person has their own story; what is common to all is that homelessness and housing insecurity is traumatic, stressful and filled with uncertainty. Our homelessness crisis is worsening month by month and it is at the forefront of our minds, however your company can help make a real change by choosing to support this clever and cost-effective initiative.”

Shane Dempsey, Communications Director, Construction Industry Federation (CIF) said:

“Homelessness is a huge challenge for Ireland, for our industry and all industries. Anywhere that we can make a difference, we want to be involved. We are delighted that Eaton is the first CIF member company to get the ball rolling and secure a deposit for a home for people experiencing homelessness. We are launching this initiative so that other member companies can continue on this great work throughout 2020.
